Actress Wunmi Mosaku spoke candidly about the contrast between real life and online perception during a recent conversation with theGrio ahead of the theatrical release of her new film, "The Social Reckoning." The project, which is scheduled to land in theaters on Friday, Oct. 9, explores the corporate and legal complexities surrounding tech giant Meta long after the early startup days depicted in previous films.

In an interview conducted over Zoom, Mosaku admitted that her personal social media accounts offer a highly polished and selective glimpse into her world. While followers see photos from glamorous cover shoots and red carpet appearances, she emphasized that those posts do not capture the full reality of her daily routine or her professional journey.

The "Lovecraft Country" and "Sinners" star explained to theGrio that her online presence omits the ongoing challenges of acting, such as navigating periods of unemployment and dealing with the anxiety of not knowing when the next job might come. Additionally, Mosaku noted that she does not post about the daily realities of raising two children, nor does she share her personal experiences as a Black Brit and a Nigerian living in the United States. She plainly stated to the outlet that social media, in her view, is ultimately centered around illusion.

Despite her reservations about online platforms, Mosaku acknowledged her own continued engagement with them. She told theGrio that while reading the script for "The Social Reckoning" made her confront the documented real-world consequences of social media, she still participates because digital platforms have become embedded in modern society.

In "The Social Reckoning," Mosaku portrays Raya, a member of Meta's legal counsel tasked with guiding executive Mark Zuckerberg through legal disputes while attempting to make him appear more empathetic to the public. Mosaku described her character as a practical worker driven by financial necessity rather than an ideological crusade. She noted that Raya recognizes the negative impacts of the platform but continues showing up to work to earn a paycheck and cover her expenses.

Mosaku drew a parallel between her character's pragmatic choices and the everyday compromises made by ordinary consumers. Speaking to theGrio, she observed that while many people express criticism toward powerful figures and corporate billionaires, they often continue using their products out of convenience or necessity.

Addressing the broader climate of digital communication, Mosaku told theGrio that social media causes her anxiety because the current online culture lacks constructive disagreement and kindness. She expressed that being completely transparent online requires a level of vulnerability that exposes individuals to public backlash. While she expressed hope for greater truthfulness across digital platforms, she noted with a laugh that she does not plan to be the first person to risk that exposure.
