Voters of Tomorrow Backs Slate of Progressive Black Candidates for Federal Office
Youth political advocacy group Voters of Tomorrow has announced its official endorsement of progressive Black candidates Angie Nixon, Justin J. Pearson, and Donavan McKinney. The organization is deploying a $1 million campaign to mobilize nearly 50 million eligible Gen Z voters across key races.

Youth political advocacy group Voters of Tomorrow has officially endorsed three progressive Black candidates competing in major legislative races ahead of Election Day, according to reporting by theGrio. The national organization, which was established in 2019 to empower young voters, is throwing its support behind Florida U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon, Tennessee Congressional candidate Justin J. Pearson, and Michigan Congressional candidate Donavan McKinney.
The endorsement strategy comes during a critical moment for youth civic engagement following shifts in voter turnout patterns. According to reporting from theGrio, Voters of Tomorrow executive director and founder Santiago Mayer stated that the group selected leaders dedicated to fighting for working-class families, confronting corporate interests, and addressing climate and economic challenges. Mayer noted that momentum among young electors will be vital to electing officials who align with their core values.
With nearly 50 million Gen Z members eligible to vote in 2026, advocacy groups are expanding outreach efforts across the nation. Kaya Jones, senior director of programming at Voters of Tomorrow, told theGrio that representation is essential for inspiring young voters of color. Jones highlighted that seeing leaders like Pearson, McKinney, and Nixon demonstrates to younger generations that they do not need to wait to step into leadership roles.
Pearson, a 32-year-old state representative running for Tennessee's 9th Congressional District, expressed gratitude for the organization's backing. As reported by theGrio, Pearson emphasized his commitment to partnering with young organizers to push for increased wages, reduced living expenses, and expanded healthcare access. Pearson previously joined hundreds of young activists at Voters of Tomorrow's summer summit in North Carolina, where participants trained in digital mobilization, voting rights defense, and peer-to-peer organizing.
In Michigan's 13th Congressional District, 34-year-old Democratic nominee Donavan McKinney shared with theGrio that his campaign focuses on expanding healthcare access, passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and overturning Citizens United. Meanwhile, Florida Senate nominee Angie Nixon, whose national profile has grown amid conservative attacks, reiterated the urgency of addressing practical economic concerns. Nixon told theGrio that Florida residents need Senate leadership dedicated to lowering everyday costs and creating affordable opportunities for future generations.
The endorsements highlight a broader movement among progressive candidates connecting affordability concerns—such as healthcare, gas, groceries, and housing—to systemic political corruption. According to theGrio, Voters of Tomorrow has launched a $1 million campaign focused on voter mobilization, particularly in swing states. The group reports reaching over 250,000 young voters directly through registration drives and voter contact initiatives ahead of Nov. 3.
