Former President Donald Trump has strongly denied reports claiming his administration considered adding his name to Ford's Theatre, the historic Washington, D.C., location where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. The denial follows initial reporting by MS NOW indicating top officials had discussed potential government sites to showcase Trump's name amid ongoing legal challenges regarding the Kennedy Center. According to comments made by MS NOW journalist Laura Barrón-López during an appearance on 'On the Line with Alicia Menendez,' reporting conducted alongside colleagues Brian Bennett and Jake Traylor revealed that administration officials had circulated a list of potential federal properties.

Barrón-López stated that an administration official confirmed Ford's Theatre had come up in internal discussions, though the precise form or progress of those conversations remained unclear. She noted that officials were evaluating sites that might face fewer legal obstacles than the Kennedy Center, which was designated by Congress as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Responses to the reported discussions spread across social media platforms, where users commented on the notion of placing Trump's name on a national historic landmark.

Commentators raised concerns about naming historic sites after living figures, while others questioned the historical appropriateness of linking a president's name to the venue of a presidential assassination. Trump quickly rejected the report in a statement published on Truth Social, calling the story a ridiculous lie and attributing the claim to political opponents. He questioned who would want their name attached to such a tragic location and labeled the report as a malicious falsehood.

Official responses from executive departments mirrored his statement. Representatives for both the White House and the Department of the Interior denied the report, with the White House describing the claims as completely false according to reporting by The Independent. No official proposal regarding Ford's Theatre has been announced by the administration. The site holds significant historical standing under federal law. Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865, and died the following morning across the street at the Petersen House.

Both properties are preserved as a National Park Service historic site, meaning any formal name change would likely necessitate action by the U.S. Congress. Trump has frequently referenced Lincoln throughout his political career, often drawing comparisons between their respective presidencies. During a May 2020 town hall, Trump claimed the press treated him worse than Lincoln, and at a 2020 debate, he asserted that no president had done more for Black Americans with the possible exception of Lincoln.

He later modified that assertion during an April 2024 campaign appearance in Atlanta, suggesting his record might surpass Lincoln's. Atlanta Black Star previously reported on these recurring comparisons, which include Trump sharing imagery alongside Mount Rushmore figures and commenting on Civil War leadership.
