Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming Apple TV series “Ascension” has expanded its cast by signing three new series regulars, according to reporting published by Variety. The streaming drama has added Amanda Plummer, Christopher Chung, and T’Nia Miller to the project, with exact character details currently being withheld by production.

The newly announced trio will join previously announced headliner Caitríona Balfe as well as veteran actor Bill Nighy, Variety reported. The series is inspired by author Adam Nevill’s novel “Last Days” and explores the dark history behind a fictionalized religious movement.

According to the production logline shared by Variety, the series focuses on Rose, played by Balfe, who is described as “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own.” The storyline unfolds as Rose undertakes an investigative documentary regarding a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension. While she initially discovers comfort and refuge in the group’s teachings, she gradually uncovers a far more sinister reality beneath the surface.

For Miller, the casting adds another major streaming credit to a résumé that includes notable roles in “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “VisionQuest.” Variety reported that Miller is represented by Identity Agency and Yorn Levine Barnes. Chung, who has gained widespread attention for his role on Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” as well as “My Brilliant Career,” is repped by The Artists Partnership and Link Entertainment. Plummer, recognized for her performances in projects such as “Run” and “Butterfly Kiss,” is represented by Artists Agency, RED Management, and London-based Markham, Froggert, Irwin.

Behind the camera, the series features an extensive creative team led by Cuarón, who is co-writing the show alongside his brother Carlos Cuarón, Natalie Erika James, and Christian White. All four also serve as executive producers on the drama. James and White, who previously collaborated on “Apartment 7A” and “Relic,” are acting as co-showrunners, with James taking on lead directing duties for the series. Balfe will also executive produce alongside her starring performance.

The project is backed by Cuarón’s production company, Esperanto Filmoj, through its overall television deal with Apple. Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz serve as executive producers on behalf of Esperanto Filmoj. In addition, Anonymous Content will produce the series, with Steve Golin, David Levine, and Zack Hayden attached as executive producers. Apple Studios serves as the studio for the production.
