Attorneys representing Texas rapper Tay-K have formally launched a fresh legal challenge seeking to overturn his murder conviction, submitting an extensive appeal brief that details numerous alleged missteps during his trial, according to reporting by Complex. The 26-year-old artist's legal counsel submitted a Brief of Appellant to the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Because the filing exceeded the standard length requirements set by the appellate court, defense attorneys had to submit a formal request asking judges for permission to file the oversized document.

In addition to seeking approval for the extended brief, the legal team requested an opportunity to present oral arguments in person before the appeals court panel.

The comprehensive appeal cites 13 distinct issues that defense attorneys argue went wrong throughout the trial, according to details reported by Complex. In the filing, the defense team asserts that the trial was marred by significant constitutional and evidentiary errors. To support these legal assertions, Tay-K's attorneys incorporated direct excerpts from official trial transcripts into their written submission.

A central point of contention raised in the appeal focuses on documented friction between the trial judge and the defense counsel during court proceedings. According to reporting by Complex, the defense brief draws attention to courtroom exchanges that illustrate this ongoing tension, quoting Tay-K's attorney telling the judge during trial: "I understand for the purpose of the record, the Court's upset with me. The Court's tone of voice indicates that."

The appeal also challenges the prosecution's handling of key testimony, claiming that state attorneys presented a misleading depiction of their primary witness, Joanna Reyes. As reported by Complex, defense lawyers argue that prosecutors gave jurors an inaccurate impression regarding Reyes, pointing out that she had allegedly violated the terms of her bond on multiple occasions.

This appellate action specifically focuses on Tay-K's conviction in connection with the fatal 2017 San Antonio shooting of photographer Mark Anthony Saldivar, Complex reported. The rapper was previously sentenced to 80 years in prison for his role in Saldivar's death following a trial last year.

Tay-K, who rose to prominence within hip-hop following his 2017 single "The Race," is presently serving two concurrent long-term prison sentences in Texas. In addition to the 80-year sentence handed down for the San Antonio shooting of Mark Anthony Saldivar, the rapper received a 55-year sentence

Official court and correctional records cited by Complex confirm that Tay-K does not currently have a scheduled release date. His initial parole eligibility is designated for the year 2049, while his complete sentence expiration date is listed as 2099. Kulture Newz has not independently confirmed whether the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals will grant the defense team's request for oral argument.
