A high-profile real estate dispute involving music legend Stevie Wonder has intensified in Los Angeles County after a longtime occupant filed a legal response contesting her eviction. Carmen Efferson, identified as Wonder’s reported one-time fiancée, submitted a formal answer to an unlawful detainer lawsuit initially filed by Wonder’s legal team in October, according to reporting by Rolling Stone.

The conflict centers on a three-bedroom residence situated in the Hollywood Hills where Efferson has resided since 1988. Wonder’s complaint, filed on Oct. 22 in Los Angeles Superior Court, states that the two parties originally established an oral agreement that allowed Efferson to reside on the property without paying rent for nearly four decades. Tensions escalated over the summer when representatives for the singer attempted to access the premises for a property insurance renewal inspection. Court exhibits obtained by Rolling Stone detail that Wonder's agents made three separate attempts to enter the home in July, but Efferson reportedly denied them access and sent an explicit rejection email to Wonder’s attorney, David Huff.

In her newly filed response obtained by Rolling Stone, Efferson is countersuing with allegations of a breach of the warranty of habitability. The court filing asserts that Wonder failed to maintain the property according to baseline legal standards for human occupancy. Efferson’s legal claims point to an array of structural issues, including dampness and mold, leaking ceilings and walls, damaged plumbing, compromised window screens, and physical holes in the carpets, floors, and drywall.

Efferson is petitioning the court to compel Wonder to complete all necessary repairs on the home, cover her accumulated attorney fees, and establish a reasonable reduced rental value until the alleged living conditions are resolved. Additionally, Efferson contends in the filing that she provided rent or other nonmonetary considerations and services in exchange for her residence rights over the decades. The document also challenges the validity of Wonder’s legal standing, claiming he does not hold proper title to the property.

A legal representative for Wonder did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the counterclaims, according to Rolling Stone. Kulture Newz has not independently verified the current conditions of the property or the court docket entries.
