Snoop Dogg Steps In As Hip-Hop Mentor In 1915 Japan In New Video Game Trailer
SEGA has unveiled a new preview for its upcoming video game 'Stranger Than Heaven,' showcasing hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg as a smuggler named Orpheus who mentors a young artist in 1915 Japan. The historical narrative blends music creation with dramatic storytelling across several decades. The title is scheduled to debut in early 2027.

Hip-hop pioneer Snoop Dogg is bringing rap mentorship to historical Japan in the upcoming video game title Stranger Than Heaven, according to reporting by AllHipHop. The game's newly released Act 1: Kokura Story Trailer features Snoop Dogg portraying a smuggler named Orpheus who steps into the role of a musical coach for a young boy searching for his identity.
In the trailer released on Friday, October 16, Orpheus connects with the game's lead character, Makoto Daito, through a music lesson. The scene pairs guidance on transforming personal emotions into song with lyrics detailing isolation and the search for belonging, AllHipHop reported. Makoto enters the narrative by sneaking aboard Orpheus' vessel to make the voyage to Kokura, Fukuoka, setting off a fictional saga that unfolds across five Japanese cities between 1915 and 1965.
Details regarding Orpheus serving as a mentor initially surfaced in May, according to AllHipHop. In the story, Orpheus takes Makoto under his wing, relying on the boy's command of the Japanese language as they navigate their surroundings together while recognizing the youth's musical talent. Makoto, who has an American father and a Japanese mother, grew up in the United States before losing both parents and enduring racial hostility. Those hardships prompt his decision to travel to his mother's home country.
During his voyage, Makoto encounters Yu Shinjo, a character who serves as both a close companion and a rival. While Makoto focuses on survival and securing a sense of home, Yu sets his sights on transforming Japan. Although the two eventually part ways due to conflicting ambitions, they later join forces again as collaborators in the entertainment industry.
Music serves as a core gameplay component in the title. Players guiding Makoto through his early career can capture ambient sounds from his surroundings, including passing trains, urban street life, and physical brawls, to compose original songs. Players can subsequently stage musical performances, select backing musicians, arrange setlists, and direct stage lighting. Makoto's journey incorporates both a career ascent within show business and confrontations with organized crime rings.
Snoop Dogg's personal relationships also directly influenced the cast assembly. In a June interview cited by AllHipHop, studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama explained that discussions with Snoop Dogg led to the inclusion of late rap icon Tupac Shakur. Yokoyama noted that the production team secured authorization from Tupac's family and estate before creating the character named Amaru. Snoop Dogg's son, Cordell Broadus, also holds a role in the project.
Publisher SEGA plans to release additional story previews spotlighting other historical eras featured in the game. Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
