Former President Barack Obama has stepped into the political arena to condemn the federal investigation into Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, characterizing the administration's actions as government retaliation against an outspoken critic, according to reporting by Atlanta Black Star.

The public rebuke arrived after federal authorities executed a search at Omar's Washington-area residence under a judicially authorized warrant. Federal agents confiscated personal records and seized a mobile phone as part of an inquiry regarding immigration documents from her youth, Atlanta Black Star reported.

In a statement published on X, Obama defended Omar's citizenship and challenged the legal foundation of the federal inquiry. Omar arrived in the United States from Somalia at age 12 with her father, who obtained naturalization five years later when she was 17. Under federal immigration guidelines, Omar automatically acquired citizenship through her father before turning 18, according to Obama's published statement.

Obama argued that investigators are relying on an unsubstantiated claim that Omar was 18 at the time of her father's naturalization in an attempt to dispute her legal status. Atlanta Black Star noted that during Trump's previous presidential term, immigration officials reviewed Omar's records for suspected fraud and identified no legal issues with her citizenship, citing prior reports from The Washington Post.

Omar's congressional office forcefully denied any wrongdoing, describing the residential search as an abuse of federal authority designed to intimidate political rivals. The Justice Department confirmed the execution of the search warrant in connection with an ongoing criminal matter but did not detail specific allegations in its public disclosure. Omar has not been charged with any crime.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin indicated during an appearance on the "Charlie Kirk Show" podcast that authorities had executed multiple warrants and planned to present material to a grand jury, according to CBS News as cited by Atlanta Black Star. Mullin discussed potential scrutiny under federal racketeering statutes regarding multi-person fraud allegations, though he did not state prosecutors were seeking racketeering charges against Omar.

When asked about the federal search, President Donald Trump commented to reporters that Omar was "a terrible person" while stating the matter remained under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice, Atlanta Black Star reported.

Obama framed the inquiry as part of an escalating pattern of executive pressure directed at political adversaries, referencing past scrutiny aimed at figures such as former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. The former president emphasized that weaponizing executive agencies against public officials over their political views poses severe risks to democratic norms across all political parties.
