The victory marked a dramatic turnaround for a Delta Devils program that entered the weekend with a 1-4 record and had been picked to finish last in the SWAC preseason poll. Prairie View A&M appeared in total control early in the contest, building a 24-0 lead behind a dominant start from quarterback Tevin Carter.

Carter accounted for three first-half touchdowns for the Panthers, including two rushing scores, while Mississippi Valley State struggled to establish an offensive rhythm in the opening half. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second half behind the play of Mississippi Valley State quarterback Josh Brown. With just 2:11 remaining in regulation, Brown delivered a clutch 35-yard touchdown pass to receiver Caleb Brownlow, giving the Delta Devils their first lead of the contest at 28-27.

Brownlow concluded the game with four receptions for 92 yards along with the game-winning touchdown catch. Prairie View A&M mounted one final drive into Delta Devils territory in an attempt to reclaim the lead, but the Mississippi Valley State defense held firm. For Prairie View A&M, Carter finished the afternoon with 94 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, alongside 15 completions on 23 passing attempts for 62 yards and one passing touchdown.
