Morgan State University's football team has achieved a historical landmark after entering the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll at No. 24 on Monday, according to reporting by HBCU Gameday. The milestone represents the first time in program history that the Bears have earned a spot in the national media ranking. Morgan State secured 116 points from voters following a hard-fought 28-27 Homecoming victory over Robert Morris on Saturday.

In that Saturday matchup, the Bears pulled off a late-game surge, scoring the game-winning touchdown with just 24 seconds remaining on the clock, HBCU Gameday reported. The dramatic finish marked the team's second consecutive week securing a victory in the final moments of play. Morgan State trailed Robert Morris by two touchdowns before mounting a fourth-quarter rally that culminated in a decisive two-minute drive.

The victory pushed Morgan State to a 5-1 record, marking the program's strongest season opening in 17 years, according to HBCU Gameday. With four straight wins under their belt, the Bears have already surpassed their win total from the previous season. The team's solitary defeat of the year came in a matchup against Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Arizona State.

Before entering the national spotlight, Morgan State built a strong non-conference resume with victories against North Carolina A&T, Towson, Villanova, and Robert Morris. The road win over Villanova stood out as a particularly impressive result against a well-established FCS program, HBCU Gameday reported. Head coach Damon Wilson pointed to these performances as evidence of the squad's growth and maturity when executing in tight contests.

"It was also emotional just to see the guys compete and to see growth from where we were last year to where we are now with regards to those close games and finishing games," Wilson said on Monday, as reported by HBCU Gameday. He added that the team's mental focus has shifted significantly compared to past years, explaining, "This team is a little different mentally. It's a different makeup of the team mentally. They understand the task at hand."

This national recognition comes as Morgan State seeks its first winning season since 2014, when the team finished 7-6 and made an appearance in the FCS playoffs, according to HBCU Gameday. Wilson emphasized that staying grounded will be crucial as the program navigates heightened national expectations, noting, "We talk about how to handle success. First you've got to become successful. Then you've got to learn how to handle success. Then you've got to sustain success."

Looking ahead, Morgan State will test its national ranking on Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee, where the team is scheduled to face Tennessee State at Nissan Stadium, HBCU Gameday reported. The game marks the final non-conference contest for the Bears before they transition into Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, against an opponent Morgan State has never previously defeated.
