Grammy-winning artist and Virginia native Missy Elliott is bringing a major collegiate tradition to her home region. According to an event announcement reported by HBCU Gameday, the music icon will host the inaugural Missy Elliott Presents HBCU Band Battle on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, at Norfolk State University’s William “Dick” Price Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia.

The showcase is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and will feature four prominent historically Black college and university marching band programs. The host institution’s Norfolk State University Spartan Legion will take the field alongside Virginia State University’s Trojan Explosion, Hampton University’s Marching Force, and Elizabeth City State University’s Sound of Class.

The roster gathers programs from across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina to spotlight student musicianship, dynamic choreography, and institution pride. For Elliott, bringing this high-profile event to the Hampton Roads area—famously known as the 757—holds personal meaning. “Virginia will always be home, so bringing something like this back means a lot to me,” Elliott stated in the event announcement.

The musical connection between Elliott’s catalog and HBCU marching ensembles is already established on the field. As reported by The Associated Press, the Norfolk State Spartan Legion incorporated a hip-hop medley featuring Elliott's songs during their 2023 performance at the National Battle of the Bands in Houston. Iconic tracks like “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control” have frequently provided rich material for band directors and arrangers crafting brass and percussion arrangements.

The Hampton Roads region has long served as an incubator for groundbreaking popular music. Creatives including Elliott, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo helped redefine modern hip-hop and R&B production with distinct rhythms and forward-thinking sounds. Bringing four major HBCU marching programs into the same stadium celebrates that local legacy while offering a prominent platform for the next generation of performers.

This initiative further deepens Elliott’s connection to Norfolk State University. In December 2022, she delivered the university’s commencement address, received an honorary doctorate, and made a $20,000 donation to the institution.

Beyond the field performances, the event includes an academic component titled the Missy Elliott Innovation Summit. According to event organizers, the summit is an educational program geared toward college students and high school seniors seeking to explore careers in music, technology, education, and entrepreneurship.
