Hot 97 Morning Hosts The Kid Mero and Kazeem Blast Station Leadership on Air Over Budget Cuts

Morning show hosts The Kid Mero and Kazeem openly criticized Hot 97 management live on air, targeting executive leadership over programming issues. Their remarks follow grievances aired by former station personnel and radio veteran Peter Rosenberg regarding layoffs and studio conditions.

Tensions inside New York's premier hip-hop broadcast institution erupted publicly this week as Hot 97 morning personalities took direct aim at station management during a live broadcast. According to reporting from Baller Alert, morning co-hosts The Kid Mero and Kazeem used their airtime on Wednesday to openly criticize the station's owners, signaling mounting friction between creative talent and executive leadership.

The outspoken commentary arrived less than a year after Mero stepped in to anchor the flagship morning slot formerly held for more than a decade by veteran broadcaster Ebro Darden. During the broadcast, Kazeem expressed severe dissatisfaction with the working environment, calling Hot 97 the worst place he had ever worked in his life and placing blame squarely on station leadership for a noticeable drop in broadcast quality. Mero agreed with his co-host and took aim at leadership as well, asserting on air that even a high-performing broadcast team cannot succeed when corporate executives fail to carry out their responsibilities properly. As of Saturday, neither host appears to have left the station, according to Baller Alert.

The on-air confrontation follows broader claims of operational and financial distress inside the historic radio outlet. Scottie Beam, a former Hot 97 producer, recently shared allegations on Threads regarding internal cutbacks. Beam claimed that the station placed all of its DJs on unpaid furloughs and alleged that station ownership had ceased paying rent on the studio facility. Baller Alert noted that Hot 97 has not publicly addressed these allegations, and Kulture Newz has not independently confirmed the claims regarding furloughs or building rent.

Longtime station personality Peter Rosenberg also voiced alarm over the ongoing pattern of personnel departures. According to Baller Alert, Rosenberg remarked that station leadership focuses primarily on letting staff go, a grievance that comes as several scheduled shows face cancellation and prominent DJs vanish from the station's daily broadcast schedule.

The current unrest mirrors the circumstances that initially brought Mero to the morning broadcast. The station's previous signature program, Ebro in the Morning, which featured Darden alongside Rosenberg and Laura Stylez, concluded in December 2025 after running since 2012. Upon departing, Darden pointed directly at the leadership of MediaCo, the company that owns Hot 97. Around that time, Stylez stated that the morning team had transitioned to remote broadcasting in order to bypass what she described as roach-infested studio facilities.

Hot 97 installed Mero in the vacant morning role that same month, attempting to stabilize the schedule following the high-profile exit of its veteran team. During Wednesday's broadcast, Kazeem acknowledged that he now recognizes the frustrations Darden, Stylez, and Rosenberg voiced before leaving. For a heritage station that played an essential role in amplifying hip-hop to global prominence, the chorus of complaints against MediaCo now echoes from the very talent currently commanding its live microphones.
