Former NBA guard J.R. Smith was taken into custody on Sept. 28 by Royse City police on an active assault warrant. Before the arrest, officers engaged Smith in an extended conversation about his NBA career and voiced frustration over LeBron James and the Dallas Mavericks.

Former NBA guard J.R. Smith was taken into custody in Texas following a roadside encounter during which law enforcement officers engaged him in an extended discussion about professional basketball and his former teammate LeBron James, according to reporting by TMZ. Video footage from the stop, which was first published by the California Post, documented the interaction that unfolded moments before officers served an active warrant for his arrest.
According to TMZ, officers with the Royse City Police Department pulled Smith over along a Texas roadway on Sept. 28 after suspecting that an outstanding warrant was active in his name. While running background checks, officers instructed Smith to step out of his vehicle, at which point the exchange shifted into a conversation centered on his athletic background. Smith explained to the officers that he had played in the NBA before retiring in 2020, describing how he entered the league and noting his time playing for franchises including the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The discussion subsequently turned to championship rings, according to TMZ. When an officer asked whether Smith had won any titles, Smith confirmed he had secured two championships during his professional career. The officer followed up by asking if Smith had won one of those titles alongside Kyrie Irving, prompting Smith to clarify that the victory came alongside both Irving and LeBron James.
In response, the officer, who appeared to be a Dallas Mavericks supporter, referred to James as "He who shall not be named," according to TMZ. When Smith questioned the officer's apparent dislike of James, the officer attributed blame to James for a 2025 trade that sent superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. TMZ reported that the officer stated James "stole Luka from us" and claimed "That was all him," while another officer on scene remarked that local fans remained unhappy about the move.
TMZ reported that the basketball discussion ended once dispatchers verified that the warrant was active. Officers then placed Smith under arrest. According to TMZ, the warrant was tied to a charge of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence, originating from an alleged incident on Sept. 18 in Tarrant County, Texas.
Smith was released from custody shortly after being processed, TMZ reported. Court records indicate that he is scheduled to appear before a judge regarding the matter next month. Kulture Newz has not independently confirmed additional details regarding the underlying allegations in Tarrant County.
