The Philadelphia Eagles have officially placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve, sidelining him indefinitely for the 2026-2027 NFL season following the discovery of a superficial blood clot in his calf. The roster move was confirmed following reports on Saturday afternoon, October 17, from ESPN and NFL Network.

According to reporting by ESPN and NFL Network, as detailed by Hollywood Unlocked, the Eagles spent weeks consulting with numerous healthcare specialists and physicians following the initial injury before reaching their executive determination. The physical issue initially occurred on October 4 during an Eagles matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, where Hurts sustained trauma to his calf.

Following that contest, Hurts continued normal operations until October 8, when he requested medical care and treatment following a team practice. As the organization traveled overseas, the quarterback underwent a precautionary ultrasound examination on October 10 in London following the flight. The diagnostic imaging confirmed the presence of a superficial blood clot located within his calf.

Monitoring continued throughout the week. On October 14, a follow-up ultrasound revealed that there had been movement in the blood clot. That clinical finding immediately led the Eagles organization to take precautionary action and sideline Hurts from football activities.

According to ESPN, franchise officials chose to delay a final roster designation until specialists delivered definitive medical guidance. The Eagles and Hurts spent days reviewing evaluations, gathering thorough health data, and weighing available options prior to making a long-term roster change. Within the 24 hours leading up to Saturday, the team finalized its executive decision to place the quarterback on injured reserve.

The injured reserve designation will give Hurts the necessary time to undergo medical care and allow the calf condition to heal completely. The Eagles organization believes that the blood clot is fully treatable. However, team officials have emphasized that Hurts will not be cleared to return to game action until medical professionals confirm he has fully recovered and is cleared to compete.
