The University of Maryland has placed its student-led club tennis program on indefinite suspension after Howard University's club tennis leader discovered Ku Klux Klan imagery embedded within official tournament documents, according to reporting from HBCU Gameday and WUSA9. The discovery occurred ahead of a planned two-day fall invitational event hosted on Maryland's campus in College Park.

Howard University, a Historically Black University located in Washington, D.C., was among the participating institutions scheduled to send student-athletes to the Maryland competition. While preparing for the event, Howard club tennis president Toni Rachal reviewed a shared Google document containing event details, including match schedules and a campus map. During her review, Rachal found a graphic depicting Ku Klux Klan hoods integrated into the tournament materials.

Rachal responded by sending a formal written communication to University of Maryland administrators, calling for immediate oversight and accountability. In her letter, Rachal emphasized that her intervention was focused on student safety and addressing systemic harm. She wrote that her intention in raising concerns was not simply to seek punishment, but to ensure that the harm caused was acknowledged, meaningful accountability followed, and student-athletes could participate in collegiate tennis without being confronted with imagery associated with racial hatred and intimidation.

The administrative response from the host institution followed shortly after Rachal raised the alarm. The University of Maryland's club tennis program operates as a student-led organization under the university's Recreation & Wellness division, known as RecWell. RecWell official Brent Flynn reached out directly to the Howard Tennis Club to deliver an apology, describing the inclusion of the KKK imagery as awful and unacceptable.

Flynn announced an immediate and indefinite suspension of Maryland's entire club tennis team while official reviews remain ongoing. In his statement, Flynn acknowledged that while the incident might reflect the actions of a few student team members, a full team suspension was enacted. He expressed deep regret for the distribution of the image, stating that it did not reflect the institution's values or its commitment to fostering an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment where everyone is valued and respected.

In addition to administrative communications, student leadership from the Maryland club tennis team separately reached out to Howard University to issue an apology. The student leaders stated that they took the matter seriously and truly regretted the pain caused to the Howard community.

Institutional oversight has since escalated across campus authorities. A spokesperson for the University of Maryland informed WUSA9 that university administration formally referred the matter to the University of Maryland Police Department. Simultaneously, the university's Office of Student Conduct has initiated an internal investigation into the creation and distribution of the racist material.
