Houston Police Charge Man With Capital Murder in Fatal Shooting of Chef Feeding Homeless
Houston police have arrested 30-year-old Otis Parks in connection with the fatal shooting of 58-year-old chef John Donat. Authorities report that Donat was in the middle of distributing food to people in need outside an extended-stay hotel when he was shot following an alleged robbery attempt.

Houston authorities have charged a man with capital murder following the fatal shooting of a local chef who spent his personal time distributing meals to unhoused community members, according to reporting by Law and Crime based on official police records. Houston police officers responded around 2:20 a.m. on a Wednesday morning to a hotel in the 2100 block of South Highway 6 after receiving reports of gunfire in the area.
Upon arrival, responding officers discovered 58-year-old John Donat lying on the ground with a gunshot wound, while a nearby Chevrolet Tahoe had crashed through a wooden fence in the facility parking lot. Paramedics pronounced Donat dead at the scene, according to statements released by the Houston Police Department. According to police statements cited by Law and Crime, multiple witnesses told investigators that Donat had been driving his Chevrolet Tahoe around the property while offering meals to people experiencing homelessness.
A female witness reported seeing a man approach the passenger side of Donat's vehicle to demand money before she walked away and subsequently heard gunshots ring out. Donat's vehicle then collided with the parking lot fence as the shooting unfolded. Police officers later apprehended 30-year-old Otis Parks after locating a suspect who matched the description provided by witnesses at the scene. Donat, a native of South Carolina and a father of two, lived at the long-term stay hotel where the fatal encounter took place, according to an interview his son, Nick Donat, gave to local television station KHOU.
Nick Donat shared that his father was dedicated to helping others and had spent recent years organizing food outreach efforts for individuals in need. According to details published on a GoFundMe campaign page and reported by Law and Crime, the elder Donat regularly gathered provisions from local food banks, prepared cooked meals, and distributed them to community members. Having personally navigated past struggles with drug addiction, Donat held a deep empathy for individuals facing substance dependency and homelessness.
In his interview with KHOU, Nick Donat expressed profound grief over his father's tragic death, describing him as a deeply supportive person who committed his energy to caring for vulnerable people. The younger Donat shared his disbelief that someone would target his father while he was actively engaged in an act of community service, noting that his father was a trusted and relied-upon figure in his life. Houston police arrested Parks following the incident, and he remains held at the Harris County Jail on a $250,000 bond, according to court and law enforcement records cited by Law and Crime.
Court proceedings for Parks are currently scheduled for Dec. 14 as the capital murder case moves forward through the Harris County legal system. Kulture Newz has not independently confirmed additional details beyond public law enforcement filings and reported family statements.
