A late-night block party celebrating homecoming weekend in Vienna, Georgia, turned tragic early Sunday morning when gunfire erupted in the crowd, leaving two men dead and 35 people injured, according to reporting by AllHipHop based on state and local authorities. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that law enforcement officers patrolling the area heard shots fired at approximately 1:25 a.m. along Pine Street.

Officials identified the two victims who lost their lives as 21-year-old Ja'Quavion Aderious Jackson of Cordele and 23-year-old Macaleb Malik Jackson of Hawkinsville. Authorities stated that the ages of the 35 injured victims range from 14 to 51 years old, with several survivors reported to be in critical condition following the shooting.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy estimated that the gathering had drawn more than 1,000 attendees to the neighborhood block party, as reported by AllHipHop. Sheriff Peavy explained that shots were fired from two separate locations positioned roughly a block apart from one another. As gunfire broke out, deputies forced their way through hundreds of people attempting to flee the scene to render aid to victims while additional gunshots continued to ring out nearby.

In a statement provided to local television station WMAZ, Sheriff Peavy described the terrifying scene, stating that first responders simply had to continue performing their duties in hopes of avoiding being hit by incoming gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the total number of individuals hurt during the incident, though state officials have not detailed the specific breakdown of bullet wounds compared to injuries sustained while fleeing the panic.

Investigators with the state bureau had not publicly identified any suspects or determined a motive behind the violence by Monday afternoon. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey confirmed that six distinct investigative units are assisting with the probe, with agents actively interviewing witnesses and following up on available leads to determine who was involved in the shooting.

Although the neighborhood gathering coincided with Dooly County High School's homecoming weekend events, school district officials clarified that the block party was not an official school-sponsored function. Sheriff Peavy noted that law enforcement had monitored a larger gathering on Friday without any recorded incidents before Saturday night's gathering ended in violence. In response to the shooting, the school district announced heightened safety protocols and crisis support services for students and families.

Crisp Regional Hospital called in extra medical personnel to manage the sudden influx of victims, with hospital officials noting that two individuals required emergency surgery. Hospital CEO Steven Gautney expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing that such violent events should never happen in peaceful South Georgia communities. Once the Georgia Bureau of Investigation completes its probe, agents will submit their official findings to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for potential legal review.
