According to reporting from Complex, Fetty Wap explained that he had been acting out of selfishness when deciding to engage in illegal activity under the motivation of supporting his relatives. He stated during the interview that while his intent at the time was to ensure his family was taken care of, he later recognized that they could have navigated their financial circumstances through alternative means. Reflecting on his past choices, the artist emphasized to ABC News' Nightline that he avoids making excuses for his previous conduct.

Instead, he stated that his focus remains on correcting those past errors. The rapper also shared insights regarding his altered perspective on wealth and happiness, noting that financial abundance did not resolve personal challenges. According to Complex's report on the broadcast, he recalled growing up in poverty with the belief that money would solve their problems, only to find that having substantial wealth did not deliver stability, and that his family ultimately lost everything before finding genuine happiness.

The hip-hop artist was arrested in October 2021 and was subsequently convicted a year later on federal drug conspiracy charges. He went on to serve three years of a six-year federal prison sentence before his release in January 2026. Throughout his time in custody, the musician relied heavily on his spiritual foundation to maintain his resolve. In a previous interview with radio station Real 92.3 LA, as reported by Complex, the artist stated that maintaining personal faith kept him motivated while serving his term, adding that he never lost faith in himself despite his legal hurdles.

In addition to his career comeback efforts and legal resolution, the artist's personal life has seen new developments. According to social media updates highlighted by Complex, media personality Alexis Skyy confirmed their engagement by posting a video of his proposal alongside photos displaying her engagement ring. As the artist continues moving forward past his federal sentence, his recent interviews emphasize accountability, spiritual growth, and a recalibrated understanding of success beyond material wealth.
