Veteran Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris has been transferred to a rehabilitation facility following more than two months of hospitalization for a severe medical emergency, according to reporting by Complex. The 58-year-old musician, who joined the legendary group in 2001, suffered a spinal cord injury after experiencing a cardiac event in August. The medical crisis began on Aug. 6 when Earth, Wind & Fire canceled a scheduled performance with Lionel Richie at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

Emergency responders were called to the venue following what authorities described as a cardiac incident. Paris was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, leading to an extensive medical ordeal that included two major surgeries and two medically induced comas. During his hospital stay, medical professionals sedated Paris to manage elevated blood pressure and breathing complications after he initially woke up. An earlier update shared by Shelly Clark White, wife of Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White, noted an emotional moment when Paris regained consciousness, recognized his wife Kathy Merrick, and shared a lighthearted comment with his friend Eddie M.

However, his condition deteriorated shortly thereafter, requiring further critical care. A recent family statement released through the GoFundMe campaign Standing With John confirmed that Paris has finally left the hospital to begin specialized rehabilitation. While the family celebrated his discharge as an answered prayer, they emphasized that the transition marks the start of a lengthy recovery process aimed at helping Paris regain his independence. The family also disclosed that Paris was uninsured when the emergency occurred, creating significant financial strain.

The online fundraiser originally established to help Merrick stay near the hospital in San Francisco has surpassed $100,000. However, organizers explained that ongoing rehabilitation and long-term care needs far exceed those funds. According to the statement, Merrick and Paris are pursuing support through Medicare and workers' compensation, though what will ultimately be covered remains unresolved. Paris's health emergency forced an interruption to Earth, Wind & Fire's Sing a Song All Night Long tour alongside Richie.

Over his two decades with the group, Paris contributed to albums including The Promise, Illumination, and Now, Then & Forever.
