Claudia Walker Expands HBCU Legacy Through Educational Publishing And Parent Networks
Educator and Spelman alumna Claudia Walker is expanding access to educational resources for Black families through her platforms, HBCU Prep School and Black Parent Group Chat. Her work spans children's books, career opportunities, and college guidance grounded in HBCU excellence.

Educator and author Claudia Walker has turned her passion for Historically Black Colleges and Universities into an educational movement. Operating out of Oakland, California, where she works as the Director of Internships & Early College Programs for the Oakland Unified School District, Walker is the founder of both HBCU Prep School and the Black Parent Group Chat, according to reporting by MadameNoire.
A second-generation HBCU graduate whose mother attended Savannah State University, Walker earned her undergraduate degree at Spelman College as an English major. Speaking to MadameNoire, Walker recalled how her four years at Spelman instilled in her a profound confidence that carried over into her professional career. Surrounded by Black women and faculty who expected leadership and excellence, Walker noted that HBCUs make high achievement feel like the standard rather than an exception.
Following her time in Atlanta, Walker spent four years working in finance on Wall Street. Her career trajectory shifted dramatically after the events of September 11, 2001, when tragedy occurred near her New York office. Realizing the fragility of life and reflecting on her parents' impact as educators, Walker returned home to Oakland to enter the classroom. What she initially thought would be a temporary chapter turned into a dedicated teaching career spanning more than two decades, MadameNoire reported.
In 2020, Walker launched HBCU Prep School, an educational publishing venture that began with her book, The ABCs of HBCUs. Inspired by her daughter, who initially had not considered Black colleges, the book helped spark her daughter's interest and eventual enrollment at Spelman College. HBCU Prep School has since expanded its title offerings to cover subjects ranging from Black Wall Street and the Harlem Renaissance to R&B and cybersecurity.
Building on her educational mission, Walker established the Black Parent Group Chat, which MadameNoire reported has expanded into a network of 40,000 families. The digital community connects parents with summer opportunities, internships, and career resources at institutions such as Howard, Hampton, Harvard, and MIT. Walker explained to MadameNoire that her ultimate goal remains bridging the information gap for Black families, ensuring all students receive exposure to high-level academic and career paths regardless of their zip code.
As her daughter settles into her collegiate journey at Spelman, Walker is also guiding her sons as they explore future college options, including HBCUs such as Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, according to MadameNoire. Walker emphasized that while the ultimate decision rests with her children, creating an environment that highlights the value of Black colleges remains essential.
Walker noted to MadameNoire that talent exists everywhere, but equitable access to resources does not. Through her community outreach, publishing, and school district leadership, Walker continues to focus on raising expectations and connecting students to expansive career possibilities in engineering, medicine, journalism, entrepreneurship, and the arts.
